Today is February 29th which by all accounts only happens every four years. Leap year baby. Yeah!
In honor of this tremendous occasion I’m hitting REWIND on the mixtape time machine and taking you back to 1994. A time when things were simpler, when 808’s roamed freely and hip-hop wasn’t all about flossin. Well maybe not that last part. Style has always counted.
This is a KUTMASTA KURT tape from a New Year’s party circa 1994. JR hit me with this tape last weekend after we had finished eating pancakes. Kurt’s funk has been g’d out all over the West Coast hip-hop scene since the mid-80’s and you’ve all heard his production on a little album known as DOCTOR OCTAGON. I still regularly bump his 1998 Master of Illusions single at DJ gigs. Homeboy is pretty much timeless.
Exclusivo de la MM!!! Get yo’ leap on:

So apparently there was a big part of 2001 during which I was in a coma. How else do you explain that I was working at a record store and pretty much doing nothing but buying and listening to music…and yet still somehow managed to completely miss the AVALANCHES.
Well, now I know. The Avalanches will kick your face in. I haven’t heard their album yet but their mixtapes are more creative than most of the original music being put out right now. Take a look at this partial tracklist and try not to piss yourself:
Miles Davis - Unknown (-)
Manitoba - Kid You’ll Move Mountains (Leaf)
My Boody Valentine - Touched (Creation)
Sir Victor Uwaifo - Guitar Boy (Wrasse)
Cheap Trick - If You Want My Love (Epic)
Malcolm McLaren - World’s Famous (Charisma)
Donna Summer - Love To Love You Baby (Casablanca)
Miss Thing - Get Your Money (-)
The Jackson Sisters - I Believe In Miracles (Motown)
Clipse - When The Last Time (Acapella) (Arista)
Cheap trick and Miles Davis??!?!! This mix means business.

All you friggin hipsters probably have these remixes by now but on the off chance that you haven’t had the opportunity to hop off your FIXED GEAR and hook into the netz, here they are.
Really niiiice remixes/mashups of two of the better rock albums I’ve heard in a long while. Although I prefer the original albums, these mashups give you something to play at your IPOD DJ GIG while mugging for COBRASNAKE and maintaining your air of pessimism and indifference. So cool.

ZEN SEKIZAWA is my favorite LA DJ besides Felly Fell. Except Zen’s not a DJ but rather a very talented photographer. Her mom is a DJ. That’s another story altogether.
Rollin’ in Zen’s Volvo is always a pleasure. Not only does it have the highest safety standard in it’s class but homegirl is always BLAZING the freshest tracks in HIP-HOP AND R’N'B. No stripper pole is safe when that Volvo is hittin its switches.
After much deliberating and perhaps some coercion, here today I present to you one one Zen’s mega-mixes in all of it’s glory. Without further ado…

TILDA SWINTON won the Academy Award last night. She’s an amazing actress and looks almost like an alien which makes her even cooler. Which is funny because FERN says she’s one of his good friends. They worked on the film THUMBSUCKER together in PORTLAND but I use the term “together” lightly, for as far as I understand it Fern’s main job was driving a truck.
PORTLAND PORTLAND PORTLAND. Fern knows everyone there. When I found this Portland Mixtape Fern obviously knew the DJ too. “Sara gave me this dope mixtape by Erock’s partner, “EJ” (air quotation marks), and I played it all summer while driving around in the wardrobe truck.”
Besides the music on this tape, Fern’s favorite thing about Portland is the lack of sales tax. Sounds like a magical land to me.

They ain’t got dollars but they got sense…
The BROKE FOLK CREW threw another love dagger into the hearts of Angelenos when they hosted DAEDELUS at their I LOVE LA night at La Cita in downtown.
Good times and bandanas were in full effect and although the limited edition kerchiefs are almost impossible to find we do have Daedelus’ mix from the night. A sophisticated blend of electro boogie, Italian disco and a PURPLE HAZE cover to boot, Daedelus put his stamp all over the eclectic, up-tempo party thrown by our favorite “we play for drink tickets” DJ Crew.
This is a MM!!! exclusive. Thanks Alfred!

I lived with this cat BRYAN HAMECS in the late 90’s. Part time DJ/PRODUCER and full time artist, Bryan is one of those cats you meet and walk away from realizing that he just see things in a different way. He’s currently an organic sculptor and creative director in New York.
After Bryan moved back east we pretty much communicated exclusively through tapes. He sent me a bunch of mixes taped off the radio and I felt like a pilgrim when I heard how different it was over there. Mixtape culture had infiltrated mainstream radio.
This is one of those tapes. It’s pretty much a time capsule of 2001 NY and features the HOVA in his prime, some Diddy and Alicia Keys before she blew up. A great party mix even with the commercial interludes- they even did that up fresh!
