willie nelson and snoop?…like duh

April 30, 2008

Peep Snoop’s jacket…so sick.

a long long way

April 30, 2008

I guess a lot people weren’t feeling THE DARJEELING LIMITED. Look, I feel you. It’s not a perfect movie. The third act falls apart and at times it feels contrived and maybe even forced. But it’s got heart and it’s got feeling and those things go a long long way around here.

And it’s soundtrack has been in heavy rotation here at the MM!!! senior offices. It may not technically be a mixtape but Wes Anderson’s soundtracks have a diversity and fluidity that we find in all our favorite mixes. Plus, the music is dusty and hyped, so cut us some slack. You can stick to the rules on your own blog.

Here’s some selects from the DL soundtrack for you all- put together in mix form because we love you. And always will.

the realest

April 28, 2008

Let’s sell out. Hell, what’s it matter. It’s not hurting anyone. I’m just gonna take this checky-check right here from this fat man’s hand and no one will be the wiser. I’m looking at you COMMON. I’m looking at you SAUL WILLIAMS. Gap? Nike? Come on.

So it’s refreshing to meet someone who’s content not to buy in too quickly. Our man DJ PSOL has been tabbed by BPM and MYSPACE as one of the next DJ’s to watch but he’s not concerned about mugging for Cobrasnake and making the scene.

Last Friday PSOL blessed ECHO PARK with a funky, upbeat set with nods to DILLA and EDDY GRANT. He even gave the BROKE FOLK promoters a ride home afterward. Can’t keep it more real than that.

lotsa lotsa stuff

April 25, 2008

Lotsa stuff going on this weekend…lotsa, lotsa stuff. Will you be cool enough? Will you make it to the right affair with the right people while wearing the right clothes? We hope so. We really do.

We’d like to take a second to do a couple shameless plugs for some local events this weekend. Everyone one is on top of Prince, Portishead, Coachella, 100 degree heat and lines as far as the eye can see.

But in case you prefer something more civilized MM!!! is hyping personal fave PSOL at Broke Folk Fridays. And on Saturday night it’s a JB tribute at the Echo with JROCC, the Breakastra and James Gadson. Have fun in the desert.

Here’s a JROCC mix that he did for SUPREME NYC. Some krispy breaks and sun soaked jazz perfect for the weekend. Keep it flossy, yours truly, MIXTAPEMIXTAPE!!!

pure class, naturally

April 24, 2008

NATURAL SELF makes a mean breakfast. We’re not just talking some, fry up any old egg and throw a tin of beans onto a hot plate type vibe. His fry-up’s are pure class. A 100% English gentleman’s breakfast.

Dude gets hella pimpy. I mean, the man pre-heats his plates before putting the breakfast onto them. Need I say more? Definition of PIMP. Class dismissed.

Somehow we conned the TRU THOUGHTS recording artist and frequent TTL HYPEE into doing an EXCLUSIVE MM!!! MIX for us. We’re not asking any questions though. Natural Self’s percussive blend of roots, funk and soul is that HIGH QUALITY stuff. Much like everything else he does.

join MM!!!; fulfill all wanton desires

April 23, 2008

It’s been a crazy month. We quit our job, went to SXSW, returned to LA for a week, jump-started some new hustles and then were out to Spain. Never thought we would hug Willie Nelson and dance the flamenco in the same month.

All of this productivity has made us think it’s time to expand the MM!!! EMPIRE. We’re looking for FEISTY ORIGINAL WRITERS LACKING INTEGRITY so that we can give my roommate’s cat a break once in a while. Old girl can only do so much.

So if you’re into music, believe in magic and have something to say then hit us up. EMAIL: share@mixtapemixtape.com

SHOUT TO: Ian Head (brklyn, ny) whose new mix is in steady rotation here at the MM!! senior offices. Ian sent us a hip hop mix last month but his most recent mix takes us to a completely different place. St. Germain mixed with some Tony Allen afrobeat??!!? Yep, that’s whatsup.

…the thing about Day Crew

April 23, 2008

The thing about being Day Crew is that you spend a shit load of time at home. There are positives to this: when people ask “Are you home?”, the answer is always, “Yes.” UPS. FedEx. I’m there to sign for the whole neighborhood.

BUT being home all the time can be a real drag too and I often have to find reasons to leave the house. It’s eerily similar to those years in college when I was sorta just living there and had stopped going to class altogether — it’s not unusual to make store runs for Nerds Rope.

If by chance I do have to work it’s usually hard to get stuff done in my apartment where there’s a pervasive culture of napping, so to get the blood flowing, I throw sick solo dance parties in my living room and play a mix by Adam Freeland. His shit bumps like the Glass House in ‘98.

earthday all day

April 22, 2008

Today is EARTHDAY. Which kind of sucks because, c’mon, everyday is earthday. Let’s sack up people.

In honor of this planet that gives us life and love, we are gonna break the seal and give you the first reggae mix posted here on MM!!!. Don’t ask us why it took us so long. We don’t have a good answer.

This mix one comes from our man ROCKER T, a Brooklyn born DUB/REGGAE DJ who is known for his work with the SKADANKS as well as his heavy influence on the New York Ska scene. A friend of ours chilled with Rocker heavy while living in Hawaii and was handed several personal mixtapes by him. Perfect for saving the world or for chilling with a mai-tai. Here at MM!!! we prefer to do both at the same time.

certified summer heat

April 21, 2008

Don’t know about you but we think it’s time SUMMER STARTED ALREADY. Is it ever too early for daytime BBQ’s, late night outdoor affairs and dirty, sweaty music? Who’s with me? This is not a bad idea.

My man KARRIEM RIGGINS is with me. The other half of one of Madlib’s latest projects, THE SUPREME TEAM, Karriem is an accomplished jazz drummer out of Detroit, having played with the Ray Brown Trio, Donald Bryd and Bobby Hutcherson.

Here he is tearing it up at the Winter Music Conference in support of the Stones Throw crew’s Hella International. CERTIFIED HEAT.
