everything you thought you heard

May 29, 2008

Not sure how many of you have had the chance to watch the movie TWINS lately but goddamn this is a cinematic masterwork. It’s been playing on cable recently and I must say that this ranks right up there with PREDATOR as one of Arnie’s finest performance. You gotta love the versatility of our Governor. Doesn’t matter if he’s acting across an alien with dreadlocks or Danny Devito, Arnie delivers the goods. And yes, I am currently unemployed.

Which brings me to Lucas McFadden, AKA CUT CHEMIST, who is also enjoying a run as a cinematic force. His career might not be as distiguished as The Gov’s but there he is on my Pay-Per-View. Gotta give it up to Jason Reitman for casting LA’s favorite beat chemist in the role of a Chemistry teacher allowing Cut to find the role within himself. Inspired.

This is the LITMUS TEST, a mix Cut put out around 2005(?) and contains samples of everything he had ever worked on prior to that. I’m not usually into this ACTOR/DJ trend, but this thespian’s got skillz!!!

UPDATE: Sorry, posted the wrong file…we’re all good now.

staight outta chocolate?

Hanging out in bars is funny. You meet all these people but never really get to know anyone. And then one day you get down to some real talk and you learn things about someone you thought you knew and get your wig blown.

That’s how it was with my homegirl Kate. I’ve known her for a little while now and knew her to be good peoples and a dope DJ with a deep, deep knowledge of records. The first time we met I asked her about her set and she started naming off records and I knew none of them. I worked at a record store for 5 years, so yeah, my ego took a hit. I was impressed.

And then, to top it all off, the next time I saw her she whipped out her ipod and started showing me pictures of these cakes she makes. CHOCOLATE CAKE/SCUPLTURES of classic album covers.

Real talk.

down with the king

May 27, 2008

We’re in Soul Cal, it’s summertime and the homie Kone just got his Cadillac back on the street. This is the mix to match: Diggin Ice by DJ Muro (AKA THE KING OF DIGGIN).

My introduction to BREAKS was actually a mysterious mixtape labeled DJ MURO when I was in high school. I knew about sampling but it was listening to that tape that I had the epiphany every DIGGER has…damn, there are entire songs attached to those 4 bar samples. Suddenly the world looked different. I needed to find those records. It was pretty much like crack.

When I got the chance to see Muro play while in Tokyo with Shadow and Cut, the man exceeded my boundless expectations. I was filming him when he dropped a drum exploding, bass heavy cut. I asked Muro’s protege about the track he told me it was The King’s own production. The next day I went to Muro’s store to find the cut and when they didn’t have it he handed me a copy out of his personal stash. Now that’s a King.

bangers and mash

May 26, 2008

Mashups can be fun. When I heard Z-Trip play his Uneasy Set at Coachella, I was blown away. Take an 80s rock hit and mush it up with a later-in-the-80s rap hit? Dopely.

Then I heard a bunch of the Go Home Productions singles. Ngaiii. When I read about Girl Talk’s “Night Ripper” mix on Pitchfork I mail ordered the cd the same day. Dopelier. And now here we are, w/ Ludachrist’s “Bangfest”. Two dnb artists, reppin each coast, give you dopeliest. Believe me.

Knick of Evol Intent (Los Angeles) and Ewun (Rochester, NY) kill it w/ this studio mix. Did I st-st-stutter, St-St-Stanley? Well, the mix did.

central coast world premier

James Reitano has supported MM!!! as a selector, creative adviser and archivist from the beginning. We asked him to share his thoughts on his latest contribution and his response was 100% Reitano: thoughtful, funny and self deprecating. Here are his notes on this never before released mix:

AHhhh..classic stuff. Also, here’s the flyer I made for this show (my first print job!) Super ghetto. Anyways, here’s my spiel:

This is a live recording/simulcast from a CARSHOW/PARTY in 1987. It features Bubba G Scotch, who for us on the central coast brought Hip Hop to our radios (as well as Afrika Bamabaataa in 1984!!) and got us involved in Zulu Nation, and Kutmasta Kurt, who by then had his own radio show on a local station and had just accumulated his own MC’s, the Zoo Crew, who you can hear on this mix.

Remember, this is ‘87, which was the doldrums of Hi-Enrg disco at the time, which you’ll hear/endure (depending on your perspective) for the first 20 minutes or so on this tape.

pure colombian

May 22, 2008

I don’t have anything clever to say right now. I guess I’m human which is better than being a robot. Although robot’s can shoot lasers out of their eyes and that’s pretty cool. LASERS.

This is a mix I found while trolling the netz. This cat Papito put it together from records that he found digging in Colombia. High quality latin funk and cumbia’s galore. I’d like to go to Colombia. I hear they have good coffee.

CERTIFIED HEAT.

trill to the end

May 21, 2008

You know what’s been killing me lately? All this crazy corporate cross promotion that’s been going on. When I’m watching THE LAKERS game I don’t wanna see a friggin SPEED RACER intro to the game or my man Charles Barkley shillin for T-MOBILE. Makes my retina’s wanna vomit.

Which is why it was crazy to me to find this RAPID RIC/BUN B/KILLA KYLEON mix from a couple years back called What it Dew 2 and sporting Mountain Dew colors and graphics. I’m just hoping that they got some skrill out of the deal. C’mon Bun, I know you voice for the people’s.

But good music trumps all and this southern styled mix is definitely that. You get a heavy dosage of Bun and Kyleon along with a healthy helping of underground Texas rappers making this mix as smooth as sizzurp on a hot day in the south. Making me thursty.

shameless…naaaahhh

May 20, 2008

We’ve never been above shameless promotion around here at MM!!!. Especially when hot pants are involved. Tonight THE BROKE FOLK SOUNDSYSTEM host the First Annual Booty Bass Battle of the Sexes in Downtown Los Angeles. Get your thongs ready boys and girls it’s gonna get a little grimey. Maybe a lot grimey.

In the Blue Corner, MM!!! fave: THE BOOTY BASSMENT DJ’S outta San Diego. And in the Pink Corner reppin’ Los Scandalous: booty bass vixens DJ SARA T and BIANCA OBLIVION. This is gonna be a knock down, drag out battle to the death so if you’re in LA County you best be making it to LA CITA for this historic night.

To help to get the blood flowin to your posterior we give you Ms. Oblivion’s latest mix. If this doesn’t do it for you it’s quite possible that you are dead. Which would kinda suck.
