that tiny guitar mix

November 11, 2008

hawaiianlanguage_78

Been wanting to put this mix together for awhile and basically have been lagging on it for no reason whatsoever. Maybe I can blame it on SARAH PALIN or the GLOBAL FINACIAL CRISIS. It’s definitely not on me; that I watch DANCING WITH THE STARS, eat CARL’S JR. or drive an ESCALADE ON 22’s. I’m pretty sure of that.

But it seems that the UKULELE is making a bit of a comeback these days on the hipster circuit (which isn’t a bad thing) but for me it’s pretty much been ingrained in my DNA. Mom’s is from Hawaii and GRANDPA has been strumming away on that tiny guitar since before I can remember. Blessings all around.

Anyways, he’s been sick lately, which blows, but I’ve been fortunate enough to spend some time on the islands with him. THIS MIX is inspired by that time. It’s mostly ukulele music but some of it’s not. Who likes coloring within the lines anyway? Certainly not me and hopefully not you.

Check out the mix. It’s kinda special to us here at MM!!!. MAHALO.

guess who’s back (MPSU #15)

October 27, 2008

The biggest compliment to us here at MM!!! is to feature a mix and to not get sued for it. Not that we have any money anyway but the lack of hate mail and court orders makes us think we could be doing something right around here.

So when PAPITO hit us up with another installment of his COLOMBIA MIX SERIES we were downright giddy to bump it in the office and post it on the site. It’s the first time that someone has sent us a mix after randomly featuring them on the site but we’re hoping that it is a trend that continues. HELP US MAKE IT HAPPEN!

the very worst (and best)

October 21, 2008

NEVER NEVER NEVER UPDATE A PIECE OF SOFTWARE UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO.

This has been a longstanding rule of mine. A rule which I violated yesterday and for which I am paying dearly. If you’ve tried to call me in the last day and a half, yeah, I’m sorry, but my phone is busy turning itself on and off. It won’t even stay on long enough to get a contact number out of it. This, of course, ranks just short of churning my foot through a meat grinder powered by my own hand.

And now for a more upbeat story:

Esau Mwamwaya was born in Mzuzu in Malawi, East Africa and moved to Clapton, East London in 1999 where he currently runs a second-hand furniture store. Esau’s store is on the same street as Radioclit’s studio, and after the Radioclit boys bought a bike off Esau they invited him to one of their house warming parties where they made friends and started working on music together. Half a year later, an album is taking form.

This is the mixtape they released in front of the album with Esau flipping tracks by VAMPIRE WEEKEND, M.I.A and HANS ZIMMER. Essential if you like music. If.

everything’s coming up gold

August 5, 2008

Santogold, that is. She’s everywhere-radio, computer, billboards, magazines, and to the dismay of some, all over shoe, beer and car commercials. But I don’t hate on the girl, I’ve still got a ton of respect for her and her music and despite her mainstream/commercial success, I still think she keeps it real. Maybe I’m biased, when I went to see her perform one of her backup dancers ran off the stage sick, and she pulled me up to dance for her…it was pretty rad. Afterward some guy said I should get a matching outfit and join up with them at Coachella-yeah, in my dreams.

Diplo’s got something going with these artist centered mixtapes, the MIA collab Piracy Funds Terrorism made me want to induce widespread dance frenzy, resulting in some ‘DJing’ and all that. Top Ranking isn’t so much the party as it is dub arty, but equal in quality, sampling and selection. The Guns of Brixton refix is already a hit, but what I was psyched about was the Right Brigade cover, throwback to Santi’s punk days in Stiffed, which I have yet to hear. Amanda Blank has a sweet LL Cool J inspired cameo too.

Solid 24K.

time to get grimey

JME GRIME

That’s right, it’s time for MM!!!’s first UK grime mix…and this one holds it down as an all-purpose grime sampler. While Dizzee Rascal has gained international success as the grime poster boy, there is a whole crew of MCs busting out the scene (side note: our boy Aaron LaCrate is on tour now with Dizzee, check out the tour dates).

MICROPHONE CHAMPION VOL. 1 features the leading lads of the UK underground spitting hard, fast rhymes to drum & bass heavy, garage influenced beats-it’s dark, dirty and futuristic while infusing dancehall flavor to keep it sexy. And you can’t deny there’s something extra sexy about those Jamaican-British accents.

Like hip hop, grime has become a youth movement with a whole culture accompanying the music itself. Implementing DIY tactics, these crews are documenting what they’re about, schooling the rest of us on how it’s really going down on their corner.

If you’re into this mix, you can find an extensive listing of others on grimepedia-yup, grime gots its own wikipedia.

Serious.

sun splash

June 23, 2008

Sorry for the late post. Been caught up riding my bike and soaking up some of this SOUL CALI sun. It’s been ridiculous hot but having the wind in your face as you weave in and out of pissed off commuters stuck in their cars is a refreshing feeling. Some might say may minty fresh. Let’s go with that.

On my ride it hit me that we need a little Reggae up in this piece to counteract the wack heat of Babylon Structure. Lucky for us there are cat’s like DANGERSCOUSE who is keen to keep things irie. No matter how hot it gets up in your piece Danger is there to keep it cool.

Mix starts off with a ridiculous cover of WISH YOU WERE HERE, follows up with a bit of the Abyssinians and even works in the Ethiopians ENGINE 54, a MM!!! all time fave. Not to mention a drop of our boy Quantic’s latest and wrapping up with the classic Toots and the Maytals joint, FUNKY KINGSTON. CERTIFIED SUMMER LOVE to keep you cool.

So much love its retarded.

more baile for your buck

June 13, 2008

I’m a big fan of baile funk–booming bass, pounding drum beats, berimbau, sex moan samples–it’s obvious Brazilians know how to party, take it from these ladies. In a culture that so covets the ass (thongs, Brazilian waxes, etc.), it’s all about the popozuda.

Not quite sure where I found this “Baile Mix,” but discovered it was by H, a French DJ with the Je Suis Freakish crew. Boy knows his baile, and he does some pretty seamless/creative mixing with a few of my favorites from MIA, Bonde Do Role, Count & Sinden, and all those unknown artists from Diplo’s favela compilations. He even throws in some random pop hits–I never thought Outfield’s “Your Love” could turn baile funk, but I guess I was wrong. Looks like the French are getting down these days too.

If you’re like me, you’ll get all hyped and try to sing along, which ends up sounding like a mixture of shouting nonsense and random Spanish words…maybe I should learn some Portuguese…maybe I should just stick to dancing. Back it up, make it bounce.

gimme that juju

June 9, 2008

If you ever have the chance to get yourself to Africa take it; go there. I don’t care what color your skin is, Africa is the motherland and a place that we all should try to explore at least once in our lives. You won’t be disappointed.

Just don’t expect it to be like any of that stuff you’ve seen on National Geographic. Maybe that goes without saying but Africa is all at once more sophisticated and more raw than you’d ever expect. It defies the paradox and is constantly morphing itself into something else, something beyond expectation. It is completely organic. Magic.

The music on this mix is a prime example. Tribal and futuristic, the music compiled here by the good people at ANALOG AFRICA is completely unto itself and would influence American popular music for decades to come. Good stuff from all places. Get with the JUJU, here…now.

pure colombian

May 22, 2008

I don’t have anything clever to say right now. I guess I’m human which is better than being a robot. Although robot’s can shoot lasers out of their eyes and that’s pretty cool. LASERS.

This is a mix I found while trolling the netz. This cat Papito put it together from records that he found digging in Colombia. High quality latin funk and cumbia’s galore. I’d like to go to Colombia. I hear they have good coffee.

CERTIFIED HEAT.
