…Los Angeles is the place to be: GEORGIA ANNE MULDROW.
This mix could be the best thing we’ve ever posted on this site.

So I leave for Kazakhstan tomorrow. Yeah. Don’t know how that happened so don’t ask. Apparently I’m having a photography show there. If you’re interested in following the trip you can check it out here: www.yntymaq.wordpress.com. Holler at your boy.
I also just moved out of ECHO BASE, my loving abode for the last two years in Echo Park. I’ms gonna miss FERN, the cat WU-TANG, THE LITTLE ORPHAN JOEY and all the rest. It’s been a great run, and I’m gonna miss it, but if there’s one thing I’ve figured out about this life thing it’s that you gotta keep moving forward. Change is the only constant in this bitch so get with it.
So all of that, the blog and I’ve been finishing up co-directing this commercial which is looking pretty sweet right now. So please excuse the fact that I forgot to celebrate STEVLAND “STEVIE WONDER” JUDKINS’ birthday, which was back in May. Thankfully these guys didn’t.
What a horrible segue. Just check out the mix.

Great thing about MUSIC MIXES is that they can’t be contained by preconceived notions of what they are or what they should be. They can pay homage to a single artist’s career or cross through genres like seriously a confused Tranny (?). They can be a few hours long or a couple minutes short; doesn’t really matter- as long as it’s quality.
So try on this 11 minute+ mix put together by HOUSE SHOES. Cram packed with vitamins and minerals and all those DILLA SAMPLES you’ve been trying to dig up. Nutritional value is off the chart.
Man, I can’t get me enough of that JONI MITCHELL. Dilla dog, you certified son.

MM!!! is a lot like a PIRATE SHIP that I am the part-time captain of. We deal in buried treasure, swig a good amount of rum and generally cause havoc on the high seas. Unfortunately, pirates are known to be quite a fickle lot, not to be trusted and at their worst mutinous and made to walk the plank.
Well, there hasn’t been a mutiny and I haven’t made use of the plank just yet but I must say that some of my favorite CONSPIRATORIAL SWASHBUCKLERS have had to jump ship and seek fortunes on another path. I wish them all the best and perhaps they will even be back onboard the SS MIXTAPEMIXTAPE at a later date but as of right now it’s pretty much just me and MY PEGLEG and a bottle of Captain Morgans.
All of this is a round about way of saying- Please forgive us if the posts aren’t coming as regularly as they have been. This is all still a work in progress. And oh yeah, IF YOU LOVE MUSIC AND WANT TO WRITE for the most salacious, scallywag of a pirate, hit us up at: share@mixtapemixtape.com
TODAY’S mix comes from the illest JAZZ BLOGS around: EL REZA. These fine gentlemen are purveyors of some of the funkiest, enlightened and hard to find music of the genre and it is always a spiritual experience to peep one of their mixes. I listened to this while riding my bike through Los Angeles today and I really couldn’t think of better music to match the scene. OFFICIAL.

By now it’s sunk in that we’ve lost a true musical pioneer in the form of Isaac Hayes. I shouldn’t have to say too much about this man that’s hasn’t already been written, but, his legacy lives on in all forms of our culture. His presence at Sunset Junction was especially missed this year, as his headlining the annual Los Angeles music fest DID seem a bit too good to be true. But alas…
So, Kutmasta Kurt has graciously assembled a mix of Mr Hayes music here for our listening pleasure.
Enjoy.
Don’t really need an excuse to post a mix by J.ROCC, and really, what more can I say? I’ve exhausted all of my fun facts. What more do you want from me?
What I will say is that I used to bump the crap outta the ORIGINAL SYNDROMES TAPE around ‘96-’97 and that I once tried to bump it for my moms. She made it through the first two minutes before asking me to shut it down. I turned it up; she turned it off. Gotta love moms.
I thought she might appreciate the jazz. But to be fair she’s always been more of a BEACH BOYS person more than a BE-BOP person. She did give it a shot though, and sometimes that’s all you can ask.

This one comes at the suggestion of Nostalgia 77, aka Ben Lamdin, aka The Newly Wed.
Ben hipped me to this blog El Reza, which is deep in all things jazz, spiritual and psychedelic. These gentlemen are doing god’s work.
And, you know, who doesn’t like to keep it cosmic? I’ve been thinking about this as I’ve been spending time in the English countryside amongst stone circles and crop formations. I don’t know what the hell is going on with these things but I like them. We might be the aliens.
I know you know what I’m talking about.

Waaaay back in 2001, Madlib was a guest on ‘Uncle Garths’ venerable Saturday KCRW timeslot. Garth, who’s had a stellar roster of guests throughout the years including Spinna, Bambaataa, Wajeed , etc. The show is on Saturdays from 6-9 pm, and, its a weekly concoction of Funk, Soul, Afrobeat and Rock. Something for everyone. So, if we’d ever start posting classic Chocolate City shows, this is the best note to start on…
