June 11, 2009guava juice, always good
June 3, 2009
From my man’s NATURAL SELF’S newly minted, podcast oriented website:
“When he finishes sharpening his snare-sword in the shadow of Mount Fuji, the Kid likes to step back into the light of the sun as it lowers itself gently in the sky. Kick back for a little while. Even busy cats like him need to chill now and then, so he gets himself a drink and loads up a little bump and snap to come floating out the speakers.”
Spending a good time of our youth in Hawaii, guava juice has a special place in out hearts. Never did it taste any better than in this mix, KID KANEVIL’S ode to the summer.
cudi don’t hurt ‘em

Whatsup with this Cudi charachter? Or as the immortal words of my friend SARA ring in my head:
“Jesus can that asshole come out with a fucking album already or what??? What is wrong with him? What are all of these mixes about?“
Touche’ Mr. Cudi.
And it’s true. Where is this man’s album? What is the deal with that? But I guess if keeps putting out mixes as good as this we don’t have too much to complain about. Some of us anyway.
always something new (MPSU #25)

To be honest everything I know about ESTONIA I learned in the last 15 minutes through Google and Wikipedia. I’m not proud of that, it’s just the way it is.
The Republic of Estonia has a fervent national soccer fanbase, a very reasonably priced (and hygenic) sex industry, and breed wrestlers who are built for SUMO action. And according to my friends who traveled there last year they also have a fine selection of domestic beers.
Estonia. Doesn’t sound bad, eh? And if the musical tastes of the country are on par with DJ BANDIT, the Estonian DJ who sent us today’s mix, I’m about ready to bounce over there right now.

Everyone knows about JURASSIC 5, right? Well, if you don’t, you should.
Perhaps the last great GROUP in hip-hop (minus the CLIPSE), before BRANDING became so important and the marketing of the MC became more important than rocking a show, Jurassic 5 was known for their classic beats and timeless harmonies. Live, their show was second to none, as they played off each others verses and energy and had two of the most show stopping DJ’s backing them up.
Which brings me to my point. While everyone knows about Cut Chemist, and obviously the man is owed his due, the slept on component of the whole J5 concoction is DJ NUMARK. Some might be afraid to say it but we’re not. He was the foundation. The Laurel to Cut’s Hardy. The Kareem to Cut’s Magic. The STRINGER BELL to Cut’s AVON BARKSDALE (Season 1). The rhythym to the melody.
If you in and around LA go catch Numark at a show. The man is a performer. For those of you who won’t have the opportunity, check out this mix.
the ambassador

Aside from having the best hair this side of GEORGE JEFFERSON, Kool DJ Red Alert is also responsible for breaking some of the most influential groups during the pioneering hip hop era, including TRIBE CALLED QUEST and QUEEN LATIFAH as a DJ for NYC’s 98.7 KISS-FM. He is also an honorary ambassador to the United Nations, recognized for his work in music and his community. Whoever bequeathed him that status is a true visionary as DJ Red Alert has far more street cred than almost all of the other United States Ambassadors combined. That is an inarguable fact.
Not just a force in the world of diplomacy, DJ Red Alert is also a man to be reckoned with behind the turntables, as this mix from his radio show circa 1987 shows, and proves.

is James Lavelle?
Equally loved as he is hated, the man behind MO WAX, UNKLE and entroduced us to DJ Shadow has not been heard from in quite a while. Has he gone back underground? Tending to his GARDEN? Or plotting his next venture in his manic quest to take over the music world?
Hopefully we will have our answer soon, as he is rumored to be collaborating with DARREN ARONOFSKY as well as working on a documentary about Abel Ferrara. In the meantime we’ll settle for this mix that he put together for BBC RADIO 1 with UNKLE collaborator Richard File.
LISTEN!!! – THE UNKLE ESSENTIAL MIX
EDITORS NOTE: Many thanks to Bobby Burns who hipped us to this mix. See you on the greens.
day and nite

To be frank, I’m pretty weak when it comes to keeping up with current music. I have such a penchant for putting one thing into my computer and playing it over and over that I tend to neglect my duties as a music afficianado to keep up with the latest greatest trends of THE YOUTHS. Its like there is almost too much good music coming out. Is that possible?
And then there is the irrepressible MR. CUDI and his bag of tricks. DAY AND NIGHT is the hot jam right now, for sure, but its hard to think of this as anything more than a one hit wonder and I quickly dismissed the whole phenomena.
But then THIS MIX lands on my desk and I give it a listen…Cudi, ok man, I get it. You got game. Seventeen tracks of proof that Cudi ain’t like the rest , with the Paul Simon 50 ways to leave your lover break thrown in for good, head cracking, measure.
